I'm in Toronto for a few days starting Monday and would like to know if anyone could recommend some good accoustic music stores near this area that might carry ukuleles. I'll be staying downtown near Young St and the harbour front

hi, i've not been in toronto for some time but used to live there for years. you could try a place called 'the 12th fret' (www.12fret.com). they are a little acoustic shop on danforth east a bit of a subway ride from where you're staying.
even closer is a very cool little shop with lots of acoustic instruments and funky old guitars called capsule music(www.capsulemusic.com). they are on west queen street which is a nice place to walk around. otherwise, not really much in the way of a uke specific shops with anything special as far as i know. on another note, a legendary little folk club on college street is called 'the free times cafe'.

Don't expect too much no matter where you go. You want a good selection of Ukes you gotta go south of the border.

| Steve's Music on Queen St West, near The Rex, had the odd Oscar Schmidt and not much else, BUT they had a reasonable amount of ukulele music books the last time I was there.

The twelfth fret is a great shop but, like most shops up here, it is hit and miss when it comes to ukes. Currently they have a vintage Martin Style 2:

No sooner was it listed than it was put on hold by somebody.
The last time I was in they had a couple of those Johnson Resonators. However if you really want to drool, take a look and this one (custom ordered for one of their customers):

As the comment says, it was never displayed in the store.
I got my Larrivee and my Bushman there but both times I happened to walk into the store soon after they had been displayed. Call it fate.
Long & McQuade's on Bloor street (near Ossington) will normally have one or two Oscar Schmidts but that's about it.

| Bad news..the only store that had any uke's in stock was the Twelfth fret on Danfort. They had five including a Johnson resophonic, a concert and two tenors I believe. I didn't get to Long & McQuade

| We're uke-challenged here in TO. It is a real drag for those of us that would like to try different brands out. I've always wanted to give an 8-string a try but don't want to buy one without testing it out first. There are none to be found here in the ukulele backwoods.

If anyone in or near Ottawa is interested, I was just in the Folklore Centre on Bank Street and they have a nice Cole Clark cutaway tenor in right now. I just played it and it's a real sweet sounding ukulele with first class electronics on board.
I only mention it because good-quality ukuleles so rarely show up here in Ontario.
