I saw the segment last Monday about the Gibson UB-1 and had a good laugh over the whole bit. It wasn't worth $50 and another $200 to refurbish it. And then Rick Harris says it might be worth $1000!! What a crock. I was there yesterday to look at the Martin soprano to see if I wanted to bid on it. Which I didn't because it was a piece of junk (it just sold for $255). While waiting around for the clerk to go get it, I saw the UB-1 in the showcase with a price tag for $2400.00!!! What a-holes these guys are. And the genius who repaired it had it strung with steel guitar strings. Don't believe everything you see coming from Hollywood producers and Las Vegas pawn shops.

I knew those guys were rough edged... they'll learn; no one will buy it.

Nah, someone will buy it because it's been on "Pawn Stars." Not for $2.4K, though. That UB-1 was WHIPPED; shell splits, resonator delaminating, skin head covered with autographs of people you never heard of. I think the "Stars" had about $400 into it, so why not try to make a 500% profit? That show is a real companion piece to "American Pickers" and "Antiques Roadshow"; see people try to buy miscellaneous junk really cheap, bargain sellers down to the minimum, sell the junk at outrageous prices -- then tune in to PBS and watch real experts give informed opinions of realistic market prices. Not that the "Roadshow" people don't make their own mistakes sometimes, but it's great to see someone like Fred Oster of Vintage Instruments evaluate an old instrument, drawing on years of actual experience and a true knowledge of its history and of recent market trends.

I saw that as well and felt he put too much money into it..
But your right ..Someone will buy it just cuz it was on the show..

I chuckled when the guy who did the repairs said he couldn't find a banjo uke bridge so he had to make one from a regular banjo bridge. Oh Roy Cone.. customer for Ukulele World! Great place to look for banjo uke parts.

Google turns up three UB-1's sold by Elderly; prices ranged from $500 to $650 (and IMHO that's high for Gibson's bottom-end ukulele banjo). Good luck trying to get $2.4K for one!!!

It's now listed on eBay for a $900 opening bid. It's listed as "seen on Pawn Stars". That MUST make it worth more. What BS!!

C'mon people...... it was on TV- it must be real.

I just recently bought the holy grail of vintage harmonica amps, the amp Little Walter was supposed to favor. How can I get some autographs on that thing? BTW: The amp has the right sound, sweet to play through.

Bring it over. I'll write my name on it for you.

I sent a message to the Pawn Stars folks, saying they need to read this thread, to get a handle on the real value of this uke.

I saw that episode and was thinking all the same things you guys posted. And when I saw the "restored" uke with metal strings, and then the guy "playing" it I thought "well, someone with more money that brains might go for it, but it sounds like crap."

I like the show, but they were out of their league on that uke.

I bought a very close to pristine UB-1 for $250.00 a few months back. Those dudes are way off track.

It didn't sell on the last ebay auction, but now it's up for sale again and someone did bid $900.00.
