Just received the Empire Music catalogue and
they have bamboo ukuleles! For a China made
(I assume)they're kind of pricey at $250 for
a soprano.

Out of curiosity, I am wondering what bamboo is like for a tone wood. Have any of you
ever played or heard a bamboo uke?

I think it is necessarily a laminate. I Love the look of it. I played a bamboo uke, but the top was quite thick on that particular one.

It doesn't say it's laminate. In fact, it says
it's "solid".

I don't know if it's the same brand, but ukerepublic is going to be carrying a Paulele bamboo uke soon. I also seem to remember Mike Desilva making a bamboo uke before.

Here's a video of the Paulele that ukerepublic has on youtube. Sounds pretty good to me.

"It doesn't say it's laminate. In fact, it says it's "solid"."

I don't see how it could be. You can't believe everything you read. I spoke to Mike DaSilva about his bamboo uke, and it was laminate. The way bamboo grows, in round, hollow shoots... how could it possibly be solid?

It's layers of solid bamboo glued together!

Either those strings are still stretching, or there are intonation issues, btw.

Ha ha! Well-played!

Tony Graziano from Santa Cruz makes a bamboo ukulele. I have tried one and it sounded nice.

I played one of Mike DaSilvas's early ones and I liked how it sounded, but yes, laminate out of necessity of the material. Little pieces of bamboo glued together to make a big piece of "wood". Bamboo is a kind of grass me thinks. I remember seeing a picture of someone doing a handstand on the uke.
Found it: http://www.ukemaker.com/oldnews.html scroll down to July 27 2005. It is a concert model all bamboo.

I've seem them made from bamboo flooring material.
Any bamboo used for ukes will be laminate.

I just picked up a 18x30x0.75 piece at Rockler woodworking last weekend, they asked if I was making a cutting board but perked up when I replied ukulele. I'll see how it goes, might be a year before I get to it.

Played a very nice one at the Hayward Ukulele Festival, made by Dave Sigman of Little River Ukuleles. Would have bought it at the time if I had the money.
It had a cool bridge made from a half section of bamboo. His ukuleles are very well made and sound great.
Hopefully he'll be at the St Helena Wine Country Festival next month.

Yes, Dave Sigmund had the coolest bamboo uke I've ever seen. Loved all the bambooie detail. He does nice work.

I second (or third) that. Dave Sigman's ukes are killer. Dave's a true artist; I believe he does a lot of inlay work for Tony Graziano.

Hey Brian- that'll be cool!

That Paulele does sound pretty good but it would sound a lot better if it was in tune.
