My husband and I were looking at the production(?) numbers in my ukuleles and were impressed by the number of Flukes & Fleas that have been sold. So just for kicks - what are your numbers? (Sounds like an adjustable bed commercial.)

Mine are:
Flea - 797
Concert Fluke - 14458
Tenor Fluke - 13736
Posted By: Dave-id Date: 6/17/2006 12:06:11 AM
My Tenor Beach Fluke is 11,638!

I'll have to check my wife's Pineapple Flea when I get home from this work trip.

Yes, I always travel with my Fluke!

Man they've made one heckava lot of Flukes!
Posted By: Dasher Date: 6/17/2006 6:06:01 AM
'Course there's always the possibility that they didn't start numbering with one, isn't there.

The numbers do start at one from what I have been told and my flea is #265.My "Amoeba Music" Fluke is #14167 but is #5 of the limited series. My aqua body "Pool" Fluke is #8437 and is #82 of the limited series.

My Flea is #18 (that is eighteen). one more than #17. pistaccio green with rosewood fret board.

I ordered it, paid for it in march of the year that it was introduced (2003??).

I did not receive it till May. It is signed by both Jim Beloff and Dale Webb.

the hang tag is still on the instrument!

priceless!

My Tiki Flea has two numbers. One is 351 above the A in Flea, and the other looks like 8285, it's along the lower right. There's also an M and then what looks like an initial, or maybe a number. M30 maybe? Model number?

Mine was built right around the beginning of April of this year.
Posted By: NinaC Date: 6/17/2006 9:27:35 AM
And also I have to add another comment about how sweet this instrument sounds and how well it stays in tune. I just will never understand the bias and snobbery against Fleas. They're amazing, and now that I've had the chance to compare them against some good vintage instruments, I still say they are fantastic-sounding and way underrated.
Posted By: Daisy Uke Date: 6/17/2006 9:28:12 AM
Yes, the Concerts are M10, Tenors M20 and Fleas M30. Wow, how long do you think it takes to make one Fluke?
Posted By: wilkat1 Date: 6/17/2006 10:57:47 AM
My Tiki Flea also has two numbers, like VintageFL's; 255 and 7438. (I'm guessing that means the 7,438th flea overall and 255th Tiki?)

My tenor Fluke is 15331.

My Tiki Flea is 251/7406

You know, the G&L Guitar forum (a fansite not officially affiliated with the company, but the bigwigs in the company occasionally post there) has a registry - a big database of who owns what. You can register your instrument by model, serial number and include such interesting things as fingerboard and color descriptions. It's pretty cool to see which folks own the rarities and such. Maybe FMM should have such a section for their ukes. That would be interesting to see!

I have a Fluke that is dark blue with a moon and stars on it. Apparently there were only 100 of these "camp Fluke" modles made, and mine is number 1.

I also have a koa Flea and it's number 4.

There was a Fluke made with flowers on it that I thought was beautiful. It's not a design they have anymore, wish they did.

My Mookulele is a Gibson.

Well, Thomas Gibson from Dharma & Greg signed it. He played it in the movie “Raising Waylon”. CBS had a contest and gave the uke away in a drawing to stir up interest in the movie when it aired. I got it from the lucky winner who didn’t play the ukulele. They say Thomas Gibson plays a mean ukulele. The funny thing is, I have not seen the movie yet. I keep missing it.

Its number is

Thanks for everyone's input! I agree that it would be cool to see a registry of some sort on the bulletin board - informal, of course. Not being computer savvy, I don't know how we'd go about that. It has been interesting so far to see who's got what!

Here's a go at putting them in order. My apologies if I forgot yours!

Thanks Daisy Uke for putting it all together. There's something fun about seeing where everything lands.

I agree with wilkat1 that it would be a very cool idea for FleaMarket to keep an on-going archive somewhere of people who wanted to sign ino it.

My wife Linda's handpainted Tiki Pineapple Flea is #2098.

We got it from Tiki King on eBay before they started being offered as an option at Flea Market, or around the same time.

It's the one that started it all, once I heard her play I had to play with that sound too, so I bought a Beach Fluke, and now we both have UAS. And we love it!

Flea 766. Bought used recently on this board - funny, 766 is a significant number for me. It was "the" echange where I grew up.
Posted By: NinaC Date: 6/20/2006 8:17:18 PM
I will never sell my Flea. It was a gift from a dear friend and my first "real" ukulele. It also was important because it's a Tiki flea, and one of my best friends who carved tikis for a living (and who inspired me to play ukulele) had just died a few months earlier. So I've named it after him. It's just a bonus that it's such a great sounding instrument.

M10 10072, Natural Fluke. The uku that started my interest in this great instrument. Amazing how good a ukulele made of plywood & plastic can sound. Least fragile of the growing collection of ukuleles. Nice just to drop it into the gig bag and go.

Hi, I'm posting this about a year after the last post above, but, for what it's worth, I have a fairly rare, green, "Celtic Fluke" which was a special limited edition of 20 made to commemorate the 1st Ukulele Cielidh Of Nova Scotia in 2005, designed by, and produced for, Dan Frank of Maude's Music in Massachusetts...

Anyway, the numbers inside are: M10 - 14294 - 15 which I assume means it's fluke #14294 and #15 of the Celtic edition?

Also, for what it's worth, there's no serial numbers listed there, but Ive set up a little "Fluke Museum" webpage showing all the different styles and designs of the Fluke through the years! Check it out at: http://flukemuseum.blogspot.com/

My "in-residence" Fleas and Flukes are:

Fluke M10 No. 14808 natural w/rosewood fretboard.
Flea M30 No. 8753 pineapple w/plastic fretboard.
Flea M30 No. 10843 mango w/rosewood fretboard.

I've got two more-- a Fluke on loan to a friend, and another Fluke with "My Son The Artist" who's going to custom-paint it for me when he gets a Round Tuit. I'll report those numbers later.

What Nina said about prejudice: Fleas and Flukes are amazing values, even pitted against instruments costing 5x as much. Moreover, they're tough and can take rough handling and temperature/humidity changes. They sound sweet, have great volume, and terrific tonality. Moreover, the variation from one to another is minimal, reflecting solid quality-control. What's not to like?

I just got home from a 3,000 mile trip from Florida to Michigan and through the Appalachians. I took five ukes with me -- a Koaloha, Martin, Pono, and two Fleas. They were all in hard cases, and rode in the back of my F150 (under cover).
The Fleas were the only ones that didn't even have to be retuned anywhere along the way.

I, too, was a doubter about the Flea and Fluke. Didn't look like ukes, made of plastic, in the USA fergawdssakes! But I'm a convert (got five of them -- must be so). Having said that, I prefer the Flea over the Fluke -- no real sacrifice in sound quality, easier to hold, even a little less expensive. I like the shape better, because it evokes the old Kamaka Pineapples. But I also tend to favor sopranos. YMMV.

BTW, for those who still think otherwise -- watch the market. For the last few months, there've been few used Fleas or Flukes offered for less than new price. I think you'll be surprised.

If I were in the collecter end of UAS, I'd be stockpiling low-number Fleas with rosewood fretboards (the latter doesn't affect sound quality, but has additional cache in the marketplace).

The Market speaks with final authority when it comes to value.

Latter-day Martins, that's what the Fleas could become.

Posted By: Bill1 Date: 10/24/2007 6:19:01 PM
Most places keep records of where their stock is going to and I would be surprised if the Magic Fluke Company did not have some records showing where their stock is going to.
Perhaps they could ask if you want to be on a public register when you buy one. Obviously some people would be hesitant because they would not want criminals to know where some of the best sounding ukes are to be stolen from.
I think the prejudice comes from three things: One the brand is very successful, two the brand is made in the USA and three the ukes are relatively expensive by the time sales/gst/vat tax etc is added in other countries.

I would *so* love to own a Tiki Flea. I wouldn't care about the number or whatever. I keep saying... one of these days!

Many have posted this already but I'll add my "me too!" to the list. I think Fleas are horribly underrated. I want one because...

1. They sound and play great.
2. Tiki King was the first person I found with online recordings when I started to scope around the intartubes for ukulele info. Still love his early tunes (his version of Jada with his friend Matthew is a must have) and the latest stuff with the Idol Pleasures is even better.
3. It looks *way* cool.

What was it... oh, yeah... one of these days!

Hi,
Is the 2 in M42 mean its a concert Flea with a rosewood fretboard?

I know (Assume):
M10 - Fluke
M20 - Tennor Fluke
M30 - Flea
M40 - Concert Flea

I/m guessing the 0 is plastic and the 2 would be rosewood?

I have a Mango Fluke, M10, #842, from the first year of production. Back before the colour Poi-ple ar any of the fancy designs. Before the Flea, the Tenor Fluke and rosewood fretboards. In fact mine has the original style plastic fretboard (without the zero fret) that was changed to allow faster production.

I have the original hangtag and a card with a personal note from Phillis.

It even has the original strings!

Yup, these pre-turn of the century Flukes harken to a simpler time, when Old World Artisans hand crafted instruments using only the finest hardwoods and plastics. Every time I play mine I can feel the history!

Uke Can Change The World Flea, soprano, rosewood fretboard, 65/15612. It was the prize for the FMBB 200,000th post, essay contest.

I also have a Pineapple Flea, concert, plastic f/b. Don't have the numbers as it is at school.

I'm AMAZED that this thread is still alive! I've got a whole new set of Fluke 'n Flea products. I'll have to look them up since I keep one of them at work!
