Ok... there seems to be no good straight shaft planetary tuners out there for ukes. Either they are too bulky, too heavy or both.
So what do folks like in geared side-button tuners?
This would be a retro-fit to my Talsma Tenor. http://davetalsma.com/Gallery32.htm
I'll need to talk with Dave to see if this can even be done - considering where the holes are now.
I want to stay with gold plated tuners. |

| try Gotoh UK700, adjustable height post, openback geared tuners. Or try PegHeds.

| 5 Star Planet geared dulcimer tuner are not too heavy for a tenor uke. They do not come in gold, only chrome. You can change the buttons to black. If you have to have gold tuners, try the Gotohs William suggested.

| Gerald, I have 5 star(dulcimer) on a concert uke, they most certainly won't be too heavy on a tenor.

| I'd get either the dulcimer tuners (you could get them gold-plated locally) and swap the buttons or the Schaller mini-tuners, which are small and good quality, plus you can get them separately from Stew-Mac (you don't have to buy six). I just got their latest catalogue and they've got lots of sexy new tuners.

Dave Talsma suggested these tuners for my uke.

They are winging their way to me as I write.
I'll be entering the world of side mounted uke tuners - I'll keep you posted.

I bought a set of these:
http://www.hanalimastore.com/servlet/Detail?no=72
I haven't used them yet but they are surprisingly small and very light, less than 1/2 oz. per tuner and perfect for a concert or a tenor. Jerry has them now and will be using them for my Boat Paddle concert.
