Don't know of this is old news but I visit James Hill's site once in a while and found this jem.

James performs 'Skipping Stone' from his latest album A Flying Leap.

Very cool indeed. Notice how he utilizes his left thumb fretting the 4th string consistently throughout the tune. His right hand is so fluid. He makes it look so easy.

I noticed that the thumb typically plays a higher fret than the fret finger 1 is playing at the time.

Very cool video.

Other than fretting, the left thumb might also have been used to mute the 4th string (and sometimes the 3rd string as well) so James could strum single-note melody lines on the higher strings without producing unwanted bass notes.

In any case, the extensive use of left thumb looks like a great innovative technique-- frees all 4 fingers to do quick and fancy melody lines.

good point 'human uke'.
personally, i never actually fret with my thumb but i do use it to mute the g string occasionally.

James told me at a workshop once, "If you've got unused fingers while your playing, find something to do with them". So far I've been unable to!
