Bulletin Board: Resonator ukulele Close Window

I could never understand the interest in a resonator ukulele until I heard Del Rey play hers at a Seattle workshop in June. I wanted to learn finger-picking techniques. I am such a purist, that I was a little disappointed when she appeared with her the shiny silver Ron Phillips resonator uke. I've been converted. Del used to be with the Yes Yes Boys. She now is paired up with Steve James and they are incredible! Maybe they are in your area.

Holy ukulele! Pardon my language, but that's some incredible playing. Now pardon me, gotta go practice-- right after I track down and order some Del Rey CDs.

I heard/saw Del Ray with the Yes Yes Boys at UkeFest West. Her playing is absolutely inspiring. In addition to the reso uke, she plays an 8-string tenor with fingerpicks and coaxes amazing sounds out of it. A friend of mine who attended one of her guitar workshops asked her why she didn't offer uke workshops. Unbelievably, she said she didn't think of herself as a uke player but as a guitarist who plays a little uke on the side.

Cool, cool. The Yes Yes Boys were one of the highlights of UkeFestWest for me. DelRey played banjo uke, reso uke and wooden uke. She sounded great on all of them. Their CD is great too. Thanks for sharing these clips.

BTW, that 3rd tune is called "Goofus".

Great clips of a wonderful player. Thanks for sharing with the rest of us. I acquired a DonMo galvanized reso uke not long ago and it's a blast to pick. I gotta looong way to go to keep up with Del but I'm working it!
