Here are three solo instrumental uke tunes I recorded this past Saturday. I used my son's Lanikai CK-T tenor ukulele on the cuts, a single Audio Technica Pro-37 condenser mic, Pro Tools software.
Peanut Vendor - Cuban tune, one of my all time faves.

Kanaka Wai Wai - Hawaiian gospel hymn.

Runaway - Del Shannon's big hit.

Scroll down to Uke section.
Enjoy! |

Gerald:...I'm just dial-up so it goes slowly; I chose Peanut Vendor to hear. Well, lovely tune and great sensitive rendition. I love the uke used this way. Bravo!
Is his the standard body or cutaway? Also, strings being used? Thanx.

| Thanks Taco. Standard non-cutaway. Worth Tenor strings (not low G).

As expected great tunes, Gerald.
Anybody who doesn't have Gerald's Ukulele Stomp CD should get it, now! This CD really swings. It's a collection of great music that just happens to be played on ukulele.
Another comment, these tunes are a perfect demonstration that -- in the hands of a master -- you don't need a mega-buck instrument to make great music.
Keep 'em coming.
Jim

| .....I've currently got one of my CK-Ts (like Gerald's) tuned up to ADF#B using CONCERT nylgut (high A). This tension almost creates a new uke the difference is so profound. Not the sound you would want on everything, but the "Sleigh Bells" sort of tunes sound real nice with a marvelous ring. Some here may wish to try this (if you haven't already) because it really gives you a new uke sound for almost free. Using the lighter strings allows the tuning without worry regarding too much tension.

| OK Gerald, now I got so facinated that I took time to download all three. And on dial up that takes time. Anyway:.... First off, I picked up my cutaway (but same uke basically) with GCEA. Amazingly, the timbre of the recorded music and my CK -T were identical and in perfect tune together. So of course I jammed along...gosh, what fun! Question: Are these your arrangements? Are you playing ad lib at all on "Runaway" or what? They all sound just great. The hymn is beautiful. I don't get around much and I'm just amazed to hear somebody play so much like me. No, I don't claim to play as well; that's not what I'm saying. I'm just totally amazed that everything you're doing here sounds so much like what I try to do. What an inspiration you've been to me. Any thoughts? I gotta go practice; this is gonna be fun, fun, fun!

Taco,
Yes these are my ad-hoc arrangements. They come out slightly different each time I play them.
The chords for Runaway are Dm, C, Bb, A7. The major section is D, Bm (over and over again) then to G, A7. All the melody notes are in the chord shapes or within easy reach by spare fingers. These are all basic chord shapes, nothing exotic or knuckle busting. If you have any specific questions, feel free to email me.

Thanks Ana,
No low G. Standard uke re-entrant tuning.
Ukulele Stomp has only been out 2 months! The next one... I don't know.
Home recording takes up a lot of time and can reach "divorce lawyer" levels pretty quickly. I recorded Uke Stomp pretty much in a 14 day period last April when my wife and son were on a High School field trip to Spain. I had the whole house to myself.
Sheeesh... in my high school days we were lucky if we took a field trip to the zoo.

| Yes, dial up is a pain and it took me a long time to download also, but I knew it would be worth it. When Joyce Flaugher was visiting me this summer, I used your CD as an alarm clock. I played it real loud in the kitchen so she could hear it out in the guest room and wake up thinking she was in heaven! She was impressed!
