I got my first look at KoAloha's new low-end model last night at Island Bazaar in Huntington Beach. It's a "standard" scale model that looks amazingly like a regular koa-wood KoAloha with a glossy finish. I understand they are having them built in China or Korea - not sure which, but the craftsmanship is pretty good for the price. They run about $150. Come standard with Worth strings and are very loud and resonant. I'd say they sound comparable to Flukes, and while I admire Flukes a great deal, the KoAlanas look like "real" ukuleles.
By the way, if you need any urging to buy from KoAloha, I'll also share with you that the company has promised 20 KoAlanas per month to Ukes For Troops through Shirley Orlando, the proprietress of Islands Bazaar. |

I agree these are great low end ukes that are anything but low end. I am thinking of getting one myself as the travel uke. One complaint is the slik screened KoAlana logo. It should be black. The white logo makes the instrument look low end.
I would choose my Aqulias as my sting choice. I think it is that good.

| I got a look and hear of a few at the factory. I really liked the sound but the finish was a bit too glossy for me and a few when viewed from behind had slightly crooked shoulders but I hear they are working on making it better and I know Alan will be on it till its right.

| Thanks for the info re. the new Ko'Alanas. I've seen them, too, and they are certainly pretty. And for the price they have an excellent ring. I am not surprised that the Ko'Aloha family (the Alvin Okami's) has been so generous with "Ukes for Troops"; they are noted for their heart! My first "real" uke was a Ko'Aloha Concert (3yrs ago) and in November I bought a Ko'Aloha "Pineapple Sunday" which has the most exciting, bright sound I've ever heard in a ukulele.

I'm a Koaloha fan too.
Mike at alternate tunings carries them and does a set up on them. (not sure but I think he buffs out the gloss with some fine steel wool among other things.)

| I got a KoAlana from Mike at Alternate Tunings a couple of weeks ago, and I've hardly put it down. The buffing makes it look really nice, and with Aquila Nylguts, it sounds as good as it looks. I also upgraded the tuners to Grover 4Ws. All in all, I'm as happy with the KoAlana as I am with my KoAlohas (concert & tenor). It's a solid addition to their line.
