Okay okay okay, now THIS song has GOT to be my most favorite in the world at this time as it describes perfectly what songwriters and performers go through, especially now that the songwriting competition is coming up on July 30 on Kauai. This will be my last music post for a while (yeah, some are probably saying "Thank God, we need a break from this crazy guy!") but hey, it's my stress relief from work as well as the anticipation of it all, ya know?
Doing it gave me a whole new respect for Kenny Rogers as the song sounds so deceptively, easily simple, yet the vocal range is quite demanding as it contrasts between the verses and the chorus, yet at the same time the quiet verse portions have to be phrased and enunciated delicately, carefully. For me at least, it was a real challenge and the sense of accomplishment (and relief!) when I finally got through with it is indescribable:

Hope ya likes it...and oh yeah, I rewrote a couple of words in the second verse to fit our wonderful ukulele forum...heh heh.
BTW, here is the (brand new) instrument used on this recording:

| You are truly talented Charlie. And your voice is just a pleasure to listen to. And the uke sounds heavenly. But, uh oh. Another case of (dare I say it?) love the singer, hate the song (for me).

I have to agree. I wonder if the Michael Bolton songbook is next ;-)
I'm actually getting nostalgic for "Feelings."
We love you, or we would not kid.

Charlie, at risk of being redundant, you are one of the few who really pull it off with uke accompaniment. I try to wonder how it happens; is it your voice and the uke being good together, your talent? why do some (like me) seem to need more than just an uke?
anyways, kudos...
i agree with the song choices, but what do i know?
you do them so well.
on a side note, if you can get away for the afternoon on Wed, I'll hook you up w/a ride from the hotel to the kanikapila BBQ, hula party at the beach park... yes uke-folk, this is how it happens, and you ALL are welcome. ( and i got the chicken to prove it!)
I do hope you will sing a couple songs Charlie... after all, if I can....
I'll have my P.A. set up too.

To all, your kind comments are so very gratifying to my heart. Michael Locey, I'll call you when I get in.
And to Mimi -
"I listened to your song
In the stillness before dawn"?
That's as pretty a pair of lines for a song lyric opening as I've Ever heard!

| I am honestly a big fan of Charlie the Incredible Bulk. If I didn't enjoy his singing I wouldn't comment at all. We just have different taste in songs, I guess (except for Desperado). I do have to compliment Nancy on her exceptionally good taste, and of course that's not just because she usually agrees with me (LOL)

Blue,
Someday I shall explain my "Bulk" net moniker here, I do get asked about it all the time, but I am far from "incredible"...so Desperado was the only song you liked (that I happen to like also)?

Thanks kindly Blue, I totally get it now. Thanks.
Nancy, which original was this we're talking about, the "Bathe Me In Candlelight" one...?
Sing'N'Dance, I am simply (and very slowly) getting into some of my studio equipment that I once had sprawled out all over the house (four keyboards, electronic drum set, 8-track digital recorder, mics, stands, etc.) back when I turned my humble abode into a home studio ("garage" studio?) when I was into writing songs and demo'ing them heavily in order to mail out CD song submissions.
But reality has set in - there's a lotta competition out there - and not actually residing in one of the major music centers of the country (Nashville, Hollywood, etc.) significantly reduces one's chances of placing stuff. Oh well, Hawaii is a nice place to live. And now that I've discovered ukes...yikes.

| Well Mr. B. if only that equipment would make my singing as good as yours I'd invest. I'd better stick with the tin can for a while. (p.s. no need for any caps or such on my screenname, I'm a lower caps kinda girl.)

Although hard to admit to oneself sometimes, I kinda think the equipment does help and one thing for sure, properly utilized it won't make one sound any worse...!

Nicely done, MR.
I am still trying to figure out how to do decent home recordings. I bought an iMac, and an expensive firewire audio interface. But, when I realized I can only do one track at a time with GarageBand, well, that's about as far as I've gotten.
I guess I gotta step up to the credit card plate, again, and get Logic Pro so I can do simultaneous multi-track recordings? As a performing busker, I want to be able to record live 'off the floor.' Or, at least, lay down two tracks to start (uke and vocal).
I would appreciate any suggestions about how to go about this.

Boz, unless you *must* capture digitally, a simple Tascam 4-track for about a hundred bucks will do nicely, just don't skimp on microphone cost.
And even after you record and want to get it onto computer, a simple program like Audacity (free download) with an RCA-to-1/8" jack adapter between your 4-track and computer will do the trick.
Good luck!

I'll admit that I love this song. I'm a sucker for big ballads and nice chord changes. And stripped down to a nice acoustic instrument, and a much more interesting voice than Kenny, the song holds up. This is very nice.
I'd pay a million bucks for your vibrato. You've got a throat of gold.

WOW, you guys are incredible. It is so very heartwarming and indeed gratifying toread such encouraging comments, especially now when I am amid s sea of extremely talented people - those who have enough confidence and prior feedback from others to bravely plunk down a couple thou to travel to our islands and register for this songwriting competition event. I have heard some of the other participants perform their songs and they are truly gifted, making all of us wonder among ourselves why some are not yet already "making it" in the musci bidness. That's a sign of just how competitive and cutthroat this industry is, that there are SO many great songwriters out there that producers and recording artist managers pretty much have their pick.
It doesn't help that there are many cliques already formed between attendees from prior years, and they pretty much ignore the newcomers such as myself. Well, that's just all the more incentive to rise above them and show'em what we got!

I like your attitude, Charlie.
You wrote: "...making all of us wonder among ourselves why some are not yet already "making it" in the musci bidness."
Well, I don't think it's too hard to figure out. "Making it" seems to me to be a weird mixture of luck and an obnoxious level of self-promotion. As you identified, there are cliques. I think knowing "the right people" probably figures into that luck as well.
One of the reasons I continue to go to open mikes is to hear those rare performers who are simply too good to make it. We have a few players in our little area who are simply amazing--technical competence on their instrument, deep lyrics, and most of the time their music just shoots right over the heads of most folks. Those are the folks I'm trying to emulate. I have very little interest in covering much of anything I hear on the radio today. It's just not worthy of my time and study.
And don't even get me going about music contests. Art is not a contest. Great art is not remembered because it won a prize. Sometimes great art is remembered for the money it *didn't* make, though. It is remembered for almost every other reason.

You did a great job on that - it builds just right. The vocal is really well done, and I'm impressed that you managed to keep the shiny new uke where it belongs - as a backup to the vocal.
Nice.
