We're leaving for Kauai tomorrow. We'll be staying ten days in Hanalei. Got'ta drink in some of that Aloha spirit! I may even try to learn a Hawaiian song!...since I play almost all jazz standards.

Craig,

Here are a couple of links you might be interested in.

Make a reservation for Friday night to eat at the Hanapepe Café(be sure to ask for the music room). There food is very good and is vegetarian and fresh fish. On Fridays, Cindy Combs plays Hawaiian slack key guitar music. Cindy is an excellent musician and is also quite nice. The music is from 6pm-9pm. They do not have a liquor license but they allow you to bring your own if you like. You can do a search on the Hanapepe Café to read reviews of the Café.

Have a great time! Remember to protect yourself from the sun. It is easier to burn in Hawaii and nothing ruins a vacation worse than a sunburn.

Enjoy every moment!

Mahalo Philip! We go to Hawaii nearly every year and have learned our sunburn lesson. I just wish the misquitos would leave us alone. I guess we're fresh meat!

being there is 110% of the victory....
Hanalei this time of year is the best... as you know Craig, just find a nice shady tree near the beach... stretch out and start tickling the strings.
One never knows when one will come across some great entertainment... gotta be out there.

Just got notice that Saffron in Princeville, Sundays at 5pm has a sensational jazz combo; very accomplished guys that live here now trying to get a gig together. Denny Morouse leader.

GIAC (gardenislandartscouncil has a calendar of events).

How long will you be here?
He plays a mean folk guitar, but maybe we can cross paths and songs, ukes, etc...
I hope to make a concert at KCC friday nite... good friend of mine, guitarist Kirk Smart hosting a Jazz Blues Hawaiian nite with his father in law, Noel Jewkes (bay area sax player).

We just got in tonight....:( 8/14. The culture and vibe shock from Hanalei to LAX, is quite startling.... We hope to return next year.

I have a tough time with that "readjustment," too, Craig. Our flight back from Hawaii always lands about 9 pm in Sacramento and it's usually in November so it's almost always a bit cool. One year, upon return, we trundled ourselves into the long-term parking shuttle and settled in with a pair of sighs as the shuttle bustled around the terminals, picking up travelers. One guy boarded after us, took one look at hubby and I with a bit of sunburn and Hawaiian shirts and shook his head sadly. "Coming back from Hawaii, huh?" he asked. We nodded, sadly. He continued: "Re-entry is always tough."

Since that night, I've always looked at coming back as "re-entry;" it gives me a bit of an excuse to acknowledge it as a real adjustment, not just a change in place...
