Hawaii suggestions: My wife and I have just stayed on Oahu. We stay in the Waikiki area because it is a good mix of beach and big city with a really laid back attitude. Lots of restaurants, shopping if you are so inclined, and nice beaches with good weather. There are also condos available with full kitchens so you don't have to always go out to have a meal. You can rent a car and be at Hawaii Music Supply in Haleiwa in a couple of hours and satisfy your quest for the ultimate ukulele shopping experience. We've never been to any of the other islands basically due to a fear of not liking them as much. I would relate it to going into your favourite restaurant and always ordering the same thing. Something else might be better but why risk it. We personally stay on the east end down by the zoo. It is quieter and only a short walk if you're looking for something more exciting.

I'm back recently from a couple of weeks on the Big Island. It is very laid back, and has the most diverse landscapes and great uke shops in Hawi (Gallery)and in Kona (Music Exchange). Thursday night free 2 hour concerts in Long's drugstore parking lot often (always?) feature ukes.

Oahu's great for music. There's lot's going in the Waikiki area. Sunday evening's at the Marriott have George Kuo, Martin Pahinui and company for great traditional musicl As Bob note, Hawaii Music Supply in Haleiwa looks cool. In Waikiki be sure to stop b 'Ukulele Pua Pua, they have a great selection of ukes. On Maui, look for 'ukulele giant, Sheldon Brown, and outstanding 'ukulele player who performs with his brother Kevin, and equally outstanding sladk key guitarist and singer. Bounty Music in Kahului also has a very good selection of ukes. Kauai has music too, but it's harder to find. Pancho Graham performs in the Princeville area and can point you in the right direction. On the Big Island, check out HOLUALOA 'UKULELE GALLERY. Sam Rosen's the proprietor, a really nice guy and has a small, but very good collection of ukes. He also teaches a build yourself a uke class. Dennis Lake and Chuck Moore are both top notch luthiers that you can call to see if you can stop by their shops.
Good luck and enjoy!

Okay, be prepared for drinking from a fire hoseI've done ukulele-centric trips to Oahu, the Big Island, Mau'i and Kaua'i. I've written *most* of 'em up on my ukulele blog in the past few years. I include where I've had fun playing with folks, looking for ukulele and finding some great Hawaiian music.
In no particular order:
November 2006, Big Island: http://ukuleletonya.com/blog/2006/11/big-island-hawaii-tripnovember-2006
November 2013: Playing with new ukulele friends on the Big Island http://ukuleletonya.com/blog/2013/11/playing-with-new-ukulele-friends-on-the-big-island
October 2013: Ukulele shopping on Oahu http://ukuleletonya.com/blog/2013/10/ukulele-shopping-on-oahu-lots-of-choices-but
August 2009: Ukulele fun on the Big Island http://ukuleletonya.com/blog/2009/08/ukulele-fun-on-the-big-island
January 2009: Three (ukulele) days in Waikiki http://ukuleletonya.com/blog/2009/01/three-ukulele-days-in-waikiki
I still "owe" the Kaua'i trip writeup as well as the conclusion to my search for the *perfect* ukulele in Hawaii.
In short, you'll have great ukulele fun on *any* island!

Glad you're getting some input. IMHO Oahu is the place for ukes, uke music, entertainment, etc. The huge one day Honolulu Uke Festival is the latter part of July and is wonderful. Stayig in the Waikiki area there is LOTS of uke and Hawaiian music at the Marriott, the Moana Surfrider, Princess Kaiulani, and perhaps the most at the Outrigger REEF Hotel. Check them all out for artists, times, etc. And get OUT of the city by renting a car for a day and slowing going all around the island.......at least once. For some fresh air hang out at Kapiolani Park and/or Fort DeRussey. ENJOY!!! And aloha. BeachBumTom

Thanks everyone! That should be more than enough guidance. My girl is very partial to the north shore area so we are leaning that way.
