What happened to the NY Uke Fest?
Has it been replaced by the Ashokan Uke Fest?
Ashokan looks like a great event but at nearly $500 it gets a little pricey. As much as I love nature I think I'll miss the excitement of NYC.
Does anyone know what is going on?

Hi Rob,

Don't know about the NY Uke Fest but I do know about the Ashokan Fest.

$495 may sound like a lot of money but not when you consider that it includes - 8 full meals, 3 nights of lodging, 1 concert, 1 dance, 1 open-mic, no transportation costs once you are on site and workshops and performances by six world class ukulele musicians.

If you itemize the Ashokan offerings and apply New York City prices to them (hotel, meals, transportaion to and from the event each day)... You will quickly notice that a weekend in New York City for the NY UkeFest is MUCH more money.

You are absolutely right about the value of the Ashokan event. And I'm also a big fan of yours and Lil Rev too.
But selfishly, I live in the country right in between Ashokan and NYC and the novelty of NYC is something I look forward too.

Thanks for the good words Rob.

If you decide on Ashokan, and as you say, you live nearby you may want to inquire about "commuter" daily rates to the Ashokan Uke Fest. No lodging but everything else included.

I also don't know what's up with the NY Uke Fest, but I do know that we will soon be announcing Uke New Jersey Too!, the sequel to last year's event in Morristown, NJ.

Like last year, our little shindig will take place Friday evening and all day Saturday of Labor Day weekend August 29 & 30.

Stay tuned...

It's official and it's unexpected: this year's Ukulele Festival will be
held from SEPTEMBER 4 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 7!
The time of year is changed and our neighborhood is new.
We are commandeering the enormous and famous Firehouse in SOHO
(Lafayette and Canal Sts.) where Democracy Now was recorded.
Much more information will follow shortly, so please stay tuned
to our website for the latest.
nyukefest@gmail.com has been revived to serve as our vehicle.

I'm thrilled the NY Uke Fest is back on track and I hate to sound like a whiner, but "Uke New Jersey" is the week before.
So, now there are two events about 30 miles apart in one week.
Is it just me or does this seem like a bad idea to have these events competing with each other. I think both promoters are going to get hurt by this and you'll end up with two lack luster events.
Sorry to be so negative but the bottom line is that I'd love to support both events but I can't really do that all in one week.

Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do in NJ. We've had signed contracts with performers and our venue for some time now.
We purposely chose Labor Day weekend last year to distance our event from both NY and Ashokan and assumed things would be pretty much the same this year.
I certainly agree that this will likely not be good for either festival, but I simply can't breach contracts and I have no choice but to move forward and hope for the best.

Maybe we should all take the week off and may it one big week-long uke party!

Hi Scooter,
I'm sure this is the the last thing you wanted. And I don't mean to sound like I'm pointing fingers at anyone. I'm just bummed that I can't do both events.
But all that being said, Labor Day was clearly was your weekend. NY Uke fest has always been in May or June.

My band played the NYC Uke fest back in 2006 and 2007. Back then it was held the last weekend of April. The end of April is a lovely time in NYC in that gentlemen can be properly attired (suit and tie) without shvitzing all over the place-

I remember Hot Time Harv. That was one of the first NY Uke Fests. You were awesome.
