Roy Smeck Concert Ukulele

It would be great if Blackbird came out with an eKoa Tenor in the usual figure 8 shape, i.e. not shaped like their carbon fiber model. Pineapple sopranos and concerts I can live with but in a tenor size...? No, not for me. It's all a matter of taste of course. Anyone out their with a comment/input?

luke:

Hope you had a great Christmas (and that Santa brought you some cook 'uke stuff).

I don't own a Blackbird, but I've played the Clara and the tenor and think they're each very cool. But my collection's filling up most of the house as it is, so I haven't been tempted to pull out the credit card.

But as to shape: To my mind, space-age materials deserve a space-age shape. While my main gigging ukes are very traditionally-shaped concert scale, which fits my staw-hat-and-bow-tie tin pan alley and Great American Songbook persona on stage, I also have a pair of tenor Flukes (one standard high-G tuning and the other bari-tuned with the strings Sarah Maisel and Craig Chee have been pitching). One of the fun things about the Flukes is the number of times folks come up to me to ask, "what IS that thing?" E.g., if you're the shy type and would rather not be the center of attention, you might want to avoid whipping out that Blackbird tenor in public.

This may sound corny, but it's not the shape of the uke that matters -- it's the shape of your heart when you play and sing.

Happy New Year!

I like the Blackbird line just as it is. For me, there are enough "figure 8's" in the world already. These have a beauty all their own.

But hey, you never know, if there are enough buyers with your opinion, maybe they'll eventually offer it more than one way.

Hey there...I own a Blackbird Tenor for a few years now, and for what I do it has two important advantages:whether I'm playing /teaching at a steamy summer festival or below zero (really, this past weekend in Saratoga NY), that uke stays in tune and always has excellent playability. It also sounds very good plugged into a tiny combo or a large PA.The carbon weave also has a definite "wow" factor and folks will always talk more about uke in general at a workshop just based on the visual.Does it have a vintage sound with lovely overtones? Nope, but I've got a few for that.Just my 2 cents. Ron

I l-o-v-e my Blackbird Tenor uke. I agree with all previous comments, re: space-age shapes and figure 8s. Like Ron mentioned, it grabs attention and works well in many weather/temperature environments. The Blackbird's playability is fantastic and sounds decent to me, plugged in or acoustic. To me, I don't mind the somewhat strange shape and soundhole.
