San Francisco is celebrating the centennial of the 1915 Pan Pacific Exposition, the event that's credited as having brought the ukulele into mainstream awareness on the mainland. There's a free uke-a-thon at the Palace of Fine Arts on Feb. 21. Check it out.

Sadly, I'll be in SoCal that weekend. Hope hundreds of thousands show up. I recall stories from my grandparents, who lived in SF and spent many hours together at the PPIE. Maybe it was the happy Hawaiian music that resulted in their getting married, which resulted in the arrival of my Mom, which resulted in my arrival, which resulted in my becoming a ukulele player. Ya' never know.

Thanks, Tom, for the heads-up. I've just put it in my ukulele newsletter; maybe some folks from "up north" will be in attendance!

Wow! What an awesome historical event. It's so cool to see that these events continue to gain in popularity since they were first initiated a 100 years ago. Kumalae should attend this one!
