I was privileged last month to join the staff of the annual music camp put on at First Christian Church of North Hollywood. I used all the ukes I have access to: my Irish green one, my sister-in-law's childhood uke, and the one a colleague found for me at the 99 store, plus my 19 labeled "school" ukes: the seven I got from DonorsChoose.com, and the 12 donated to my school by Mr. Geoff Rezek of Connecticut. Mr. Rezek's ukes were therefore the most used and most popular. Thanks again, Geoff! In a couple of weeks my "regular" job will start, and the 19 will go back to school. But this was a great summer job. The kids and parents seemed thrilled that uke was offered this year.
I hope I get invited back next year! For one thing, the uke I chose to use during the last-day show was the 99 one - which I found has a tendency for the E string to slip over to the A notch, so that I'm struggling to put it back while leading the chord changes! It would have confused the heck out of the kids, if most of them hadn't been busy watching Pastor Louise pointing to the chord changes on the song chart. Also, we only did one song, La Bamba - most of the classes demonstrate two songs, but I was strongly advised against it. Four classes (Mon.-Thurs.) of 25 minutes each, and three chords to ingrain into your physical memory - not easy for kids. It was suggested that next year the second song could be one with only two chords, but I'm not sure I know any. What is a good, simple uke song, appropriate for kids, that you can play with only two chords? |
