It's with great sadness that I heard about the passing of Ray Shakeshaft. Ray hailed from the other side of the pond in the U.K. but you'd be hard pressed to find a more devoted fan of the ukulele. Ray's particular mission was to drive out the image of George Formby with his banjo uke and replace that with images of the wooden sweetness of the soprano ukulele. He did a bang up job of it too. Ray was stricken with health issues and couldn't really keep up the good fight. But, thanks to Ray, there are tons of wooden uke devotees in the U.K. and beyond. Ray's energy, intelligence and persistence will forever inspire me.
I will miss you, Raymondo. |

I'm so sorry to hear this. Ray was a real gentleman and great ukulele ambassador. I met him, as I have most of my friends here, over a uke transaction, and was delighted to see him at the New York fest in '06. RIP, Mr. Shakeshaft.
Thanks for letting us know, Alan.
