I found a Hohner HU-6 at a local thrift store, complete in original box and warrantee card and I thought it was a cheap one until I noticed it seemed to be older because it was Made in Japan. Googling, YouTube, and eBay show nothing on this unit, so I was wondering if anyone had any information on this instrument? Any help would be awesome!

Since Hohner only used the Hicksville NY headquarters in 1960-1982, the Palo Alto division only opened in 1967 and those addresses are both on your waranty card, that narrows it down a little to 1967-1982. The logo (accordeon player in a rounded square) confirms that 15 year window.
Unfortunately, that's about all we have. They were never sold in Europe (so Hohner USA only) and probably made in the Far East (based on their construction) and I've only found ads for them in magazines from 1976-1977, if that's any help.
They're quite rare!
EDIT
- In the UU Forum there is talk about 5-digit ZIP codes being a clue. Unfortunately, those were introduced in 1963 and made mandatory in 1967, so it doesn't add much.
- On guitarforums.com there is a suggestion that it was made at the Moridaira (not Moridara) Gakki, which made Morris and Hohner branded guitars sometime after its foundation by Toshio Mori Moridaira in 1967 in Nagano. Moridaira was at first a salesman, got the nickname Mori or Morris while visiting the Gibson factory in Kalamazoo. His call to fame were the Hohner telecaster 'Prinz' models that Prince actually used himself. I know of one Moridaira ukulele

An interesting side note: One of Prince's favorite guitars, a Telecaster copy, was made by Hohner. He bought it very early in his career and used it to the end. This story has some information about the company as well: http://edsguitarlounge.com/wordpress/?page_id=401
