Would love info on a Ukelele I have had for 40 years. It was vintage when I got it. It comes in a case, in perfect condition. It is marked:
Ukelele O Hawaii
Highest Grade
For Tone Quality and Workmanship
Kaholas and Co

I also have a banjolele, no markings, but is in a heavy wood with hand painted Hillbilly on the front.

Any idea how I can determine a value or more about them? I put them up on Ebay yesterday, and immediately have action. I fear I have underestimated them. |

Kaholas is according to some (based only on the shape of the volute) a brand built by Gretsch, although it could be someone entirely different. In spite of the label, it's probably built on the Mainland and not in Hawaii - but also not in Chicago, where Regal dominated the market with stencilled soprano ukes. This one is very different, with wide soundhole rings and Martin-like crown.
The banjo uke is most certainly built by Slingerland in Chicago, who also made brandless instruments. The painting is done by one of the owners, as was the habit in the 1920s and 1930s.
Which is the only precise dating I can give, alas. Gretsch set up ukulele production in 1916, Slingerland at first imported ukuleles in 1912 but soon after started their own production.

I agree with Karl that the banjo very likely is Slingerland-built. Clavin, if you haven't done so, you might try removing the resonator (the wooden plate on the back of the banjo) and seeing if there's a brand name stamped or burned onto the inside of the pot or on the dowel. Even if Slingerland built it, they may have sold it under a different name such as Concertone. (A word of warning: Seeing as your resonator has multiple cracks, there's a possibility it might fall apart when you remove the screws. Proceed with caution.)
