Hello everyone,
I am a music teacher and I have been asked by my administration to do a ukulele presentation on Friday for the faculty. I have 35-40 minutes to introduce the ukulele and get everyone playing it! My mind is overwhelmed with information to present. Has anyone done a workshop like this? Do you have a hand-out you would be willing to share in exchange for a pdf songbook that I have been working on for years? I am thinking brief history, sizes, brand suggestions, performers, strum patterns, easy chords? I welcome all help and suggestions. I know it isn't a lot of time, but it might be more about introducing it and giving them a foundation they can pursue on their own. THANKS!!! |

If that's all you have, save the patter (sizes, history, famous people with ukuleles) for in between and try to get them playing as soon as possible.
I like using one-finger songs, they are usually feasable in that short amount of time, even with people who have never seen a musical instrument up close.
- two chord songs (I-V) can be done with an Fadd9 (0010) and a C7 (0001)
- the booklet 'one-finger ukulele songs' by Ukulele Paradijs is a gem, with a Horse with No Name, House of the Rising Sun, Raindrops keep Falling on my Head, all using just one finger
A last word of advice: I prefer to NOT hand out prints during such introductions, because at that point paper just seems to distract. Listen and concentrate on fingers, that's enough.
