Hello all, Happy New Year!

I am looking for the chords to 'Smoke Dreams', the Fats Waller song, also recorded by Captain Matchbox and Brian Ferry.

Not to be confused with the other 'Smoke Dreams', made famous by Mildred Bailey and Jo Stafford, among others.

The lyrics are:

SMOKE DREAMS OF YOU
Gibson / De Grevill

as rec by Thomas "Fats" Waller June 13th 1939 London

also rec by Adelaide Hall w Thomas "Fats" Waller '38

Watchin' smoke rise,
Clouding my eyes,
I see your face forming out of the blue.
Sad and lonely, all on my own,
With smoke dreams of you.

In reverie,
Sweet memory
Takes me again to the days that we knew.
We were happy, now I'm alone,
With smoke dreams of you.

In the twilight gloom
Of my lonely room,
I light a cigarette.
First a glow that's warm,
Then the ashes form,
Just like a vanished love I can't forget.

Paradise lost,
At what a cost,
There's no escape in the things that I do.
I'll be haunted all my life through
With smoke dreams of you.

Paradise lost,
At what a cost,
There's no escape in the things that I do.
Yes, I'll be haunted all my life through
With smoke dreams, smoke dreams of you.

Can anyone help me out here, please?

Cheers,

Chris

The copyright is still in force on this tune, but you can buy the sheet music from several sources.

I always go to library collections - and University of Mississippi is a good one:
http://digital.library.msstate.edu/collections/item_viewer.php?CISOROOT=/SheetMusic&CISOPTR=17980&DMSCALE=25&DMWIDTH=600&DMHEIGHT=600&DMMODE=viewer&DMTEXT=&REC=9&DMTHUMB=1&DMROTATE=0

It's also on ebay just now if you do a search for it.

Hi John,

I figured those tasty lyrics would get your nose sniffing for another good song! Actually, it's a little bit scarce. Fats played it on the organ, and I've checked a million Fats Waller publications, and none of them seem to cover 'Smoke Dreams'. I don't think he played it with his band, though I could be wrong. Captain Matchbox camped it up a bit on their 'Smoke Dreams' album, and Bryan Ferry sang a lounge lizard version of it.

Actually, that one on Ebay (the Australian one?) is the OTHER 'Smoke Dreams', as sung by Jo Stafford. To confuse matters further, K D Lang has a song 'Smoke Dreams', which is a new one.

I'll check that link, thanks mate!

Cheers,

Chris

Ah, that Mississipi link is also for the OTHER song, 'Smoke Dreams!'.

Actually, that's a nice song as well.....

Dang, Chris! you're right! Just went back and realized they're both wrong.

Grrrrrr. Now my sheet music ferret sense is tingling. Or something is...

Listen to Fat's, playing it on the organ....nice...

Mic Conway does a great version, with Captain Matchbox, and Bryan Ferry released it as a single. He does a good job with it too.

But the chords? I can't find them anywhere. I can pick up the verse OK, but my ear is not good enough to pick the chords in the bridge...

Cheers mate...

OK, the earworm is out of my system.

I was trying to load a Youtube link, but I can't seem to get the code correct....
