I tend to break my low G a lot.
Is there a better solution to buying full sets of uke strings just to get a new low G? Can you buy low G strings by themselves? HOw about using a guitar string and cutting it? If so, which guitar string? Thank you for your reply! |

Make sure you're using a classical guitar string. I use Savarez, but any will do. The low G string is the D string on a guitar. I also buy my strings separately, since I don't need a complete set of guitar strings. Here's the kind and where I buy mine:

| Just go to any music/ghee-tar store and get a nylon wound 4th (D) classical ghee-tar string. I buy a few at a time and get the cheapest the store carries.

| Try Worth clear or brown no wound low G strings. Last a long time and won't break like wound strings. Look for 'em on the Elderly website.

I use the D'Addarrio Pro-Arte J4304 for the Low G. I also get them from www.stringbymail.com

Like Curt, I also use the D'Addario Pro-Arte J4304 for my G string. I use Savarez Alliance 541R, 542R, 543 R for the other three. I get them from JustStrings.com. I forget what the previous G string (also classical guitar) was that I used to use, but I used to break them a lot. I've never broken one of the D'Addarios.

| Or you can buy them from me at $2.90 each and have postage cost you 45 cents. What is the total cost involved to get 'em on your uke is in the fine pring.

Elderly sells Aquila low G tenor strings for $1.75 or 3 for $1.55 a piece http://elderly.com/accessories/items/ATUG.htm
Sets for around $5.00 http://elderly.com/accessories/items/ANTGW.htm
Elderly also has D classical ghee-tar strings for $1.25 or 3 for $1.15. The D classical ghee-tar string will work as a low G tenor uke string. Since the wound strings do not last long, the 3 for $1.15 might be the best way to go. See http://elderly.com//accessories/items/CG4D-OTH.htm
Pretty much, I do all my shopping at Elderly and when I place an order I stock up on everything in order to get free shipping.

| For a while I tried an Augustine high-tension G string, but although it felt tense enough, the sound was lumpy and it never really sounded in tune and the intonation was atrocious, so today I fitted a d'Addario D string (which I bought individually for the purpose) and it's much better. But I'm going to buy a set of Worths when it needs restringing. I didn't realise wound strings don't last long.

| So I have been playing with a wound D guitar string for about a week now. It works great and I can make two uke strings out of one guitar string. Thank you all for your recommendations.
