Hi everyone. I just put some new Worth strings on a tenor uke with a tie bridge. When I try to bring the strings up to tension, the string knot at the bridge slowly unravels. I can't get it to lock into place. When this has happened to me in the past (with Aquilas), I just made sure the last loop in the string went over the bottom edge of the bridge to lock against the bridge. But this time, nothing I do keeps the string from unraveling. The Worths seem to be too slippery to hold tension. I finally put a figure-8 knot in the end of the string to keep it from pulling through the loops. That worked, but the knot made the string loops bunch up, and it looks awful. Does anyone have a solution for this? Could I just forgo the loops around the bridge, pass the strings straight through the holes and secure them with a figure-8 knot instead?

(Hope this makes sense.)

Tom, go to myamoeukuleles.com, and click on the resorces tab, and then the strings, there you will find a wonderful diagram for the Ashley Stopper Knot. It has never failed me.

This a the never-fail, never-slip knot I use on all flurocarbon strings.

Thank you both! I'll check them out.

Gerald is right on - the knot to use is called a studding sail tack bend. I found it in the Navy Bluejackets manual. I think I posted about that a few years ago.

That slippery fluorocarbon string drove me nuts!

I think I got the link from you ToeBone. Thanks.

Tom, I had a similar problem once with a baritone uke. I bought some flat plastic beads with a center hole just large enough for the thickest string to pass through. After passing the string through the hole in the bridge I added a bead and then tied a stopper knot leaving the tail long enough for the knot to make up. The bead laid flat against the edge of the bridle and was fairly unobtrusive. I have also used beads to help hold small diameter strings in pin bridges when my stopper knots were too small to hold. And, the ladies at the bead shop were very resourceful in helping me find the right beads, too. Frank B.

Hey Tom, I found, when doing it the lazy way, one or two more twists will tend to make the end fall over that edge. I mainly have the problem with the first and fouth strings.

Great to hear from you, Mike! As it turns out, I did try putting in an extra twist this morning, and that solved the problem. (But I learned those fancy stop knots the other guys mentioned for using on my other ukes.)

Mike A mentioned the big key... the edge with at least one twist must fall over the edge...without it sliperroooo
