Auwe! I just found out that the Northern California 'Ukulele Festival has been postponed for this year.

Wow! Sorry to hear that, Bryan. I wonder what happened and hope everyone's OK. Ric

Wow, that's a first. The Hayward Festival is one of the longest-running uke fests on the mainland. Sad news.

Bummer, Bryan, why don't you come visit anyway? :-)

Budget cuts. The Hayward Adult school used to get funding for all the signatures that they collected, not anymore.

Call Uncle Frank Leong in Encinitas, California, Bryan. You might be able to make a West coast tour in conjunction with the Texas Festival. We certainly thoroughly your and Asa's performance last year! Ric

Encinitas is a definite yes! Just gotta find the time. Another tour is in the planning stages! I will keep you all posted! Bryan

I always wondered why we filled out that signature sheet. I thought it was information the festival organizers wanted.

I am curious as to how much funding was allocated for each signature. Could the festival be self-supporting with a modest increase in entrance fees? I'd go for that.

Bummer! Our schools are funded mostly by a system called ADA (Average Daily Attendance). The schools are actually funded based upon student headcount documented on a daily basis, that is up until now it seems. The attendees of the Ukulele Festival were documented so that the Hayward Adult School could receive ADA credit. The festival activity had previously qualified for ADA credit. Apparently, it no longer does! Again, I say, Bummer! I can't answer Christies question exactly but I beleive that the ADA is more than most folks would be able to afford for the festival. Knowing the organizers, if there was an easy fix to the problem it would be done. And again, Bummer!

Anybody looked into getting a corporate sponsor? Seems like anything that ran that long has good enough a track record to attract someone? Fluke? Martin? A combo of sponsors?
Posted By: Tonya Date: 2/8/2010 1:22:12 PM
I think there already were some corporate sponsors (Hawaiian Air and Kamaka Ukulele come to mind) that helped with costs and prizes. I know staging a festival of this size is more costly than just renting the venue...there were typically island performers on hand, safety/insurance considerations, sound professionals/equipment, etc.

This particular festival, in addition to increasing awareness of Pacific Island culture in the area (which made it one of the most "Hawaiian" ukulele festivals I've attended), also raised funds for student scholarships and I think that's what "drove" a lot of the passion behind all the work involved in making it happen.

Without the "cushion" of the ADA funding, it may have just been too much to take on, or at least to take on with short notice. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and my calendar open, though, just in case!

Wow. I wonder if there are some folks who own warehouse space in the Bay Area who might be able to help stage at an alternate site on a shoestring basis. That's a bummer.
