My new ukulele hero is Azo Bell from Byron Bay, Australia. He closed out the third night of the Melbourne Uke Fest last night and blew the crowd away. Check out a couple of highlights. http://www.playukulelebyear.blogspot.com

Azo Bell is my original favorite, the guy plays with soul.

He's awesome! Got to see him in Auckland during the second Uke Fest there and also at a small concert that was jam packed. Even got to take a workshop of his. Very Zen it was.

Azo Bell is great, but when I hear the Old Spice Boys I wish the bass player were playing something other than a washtub bass with it's "approximate" pitch. In that live video it sounds like the bassist is playing in another key. As a bass player, that's really hard to listen to and spoils the performance from my perspective.

I like the idea of jazz soprano playing; did I hear a little Mose Allison there? ... he's on to something

Azo Bell is amazing! Steve, check out "Small Time," if you haven't already. It's Azo's solo CD ... no bass, no vocals, just him and his uke.

Bassfiddlesteve: I interviewed Azo Bell today and he is fully aware that his "bass player" is playing a tea chest bass (they seem to prefer them over washtubs from a tonal perspective). I'll post a link here when I run the interview on my blog. I think you'll be surprised by his answer.

Well that will teach you for developing your ear so it can discern fine differences in bass notes.

There is a Leonard Bernstein piece that ends on what he called an "ambiguous" diatonic chord. It's ambiguous because the first third and fifth are octaves apart. When you hear it you can tell the notes work together but you can't quite tell whether it's a chord or not.

Except for the poor bass players. They must hear it and say, sounds like a normal chord to me :-)

Okay, off I go to find a wahstub, a broomstick and some rope. Or should I look for a teachest? What the heck is a teachest anyway?

"Teachest" is the best instructer at a school. You have Teach, Teacher and Teachest.

Besides Steve, aren't most bass players fine with "approximate" pitch? I know mine is!

Man, I have a million of 'em..

What the heck is a tea chest?

It's a box made of really cheap wood with a sort of tin binding on the edges. They were used for shipping tea once upon a time and were as common as shipping pallets back in the 1950 and early 1960s. If you lived anywhere near a port, people would pay you to take them away.

I am looking forward to the answer regarding the bass in your upcoming blog Jim.

Thanks for the thread. Azo is top notch.
