One of the tuners on my Goldtone Banjolele is busted. The plastic knob is split to be exact. Beside I have never liked the tuners in the first place. I would like to replace them but I'm not sure what kind to get. I want to get some reliable ones. I found a bunch on several web sites and one of them is a Grover Champion Deluxe Ukulele Pegs 1W. One site says they are thumb locking but I can't find anything more about them. Does anyone have an idea about these? I want something that will not slip as much as the ones that are on now.

Are you heart-set on no "gears with ears" tuners?
I really the Gotoh tuners. I have yet to get a set of the smallest one they make, but I like SGH318 tuner in silver or gold with different button colours. I have a Martin Backpacker with the gold ones. Open or closed back is just a personal preference. They both beat friction tuners for getting tuning dead on. If you have to lock something in place, you also have to unlock it to make the micro adjustments which happen with temperature changes.

Being a guitar player the "ears" don't bother me, and I like the accuracy of geared tuners. But if you want to stay closer to the original look of friction tuners and gain the advantages of geared tuners you should try Peghed tuners. They look like friction tuners but have gearing built inside the shaft. Elderly's, among others, carries them. I would stay away locking tuners...seems like it would be an irritant real fast.

I have the locking tuners that came with one of my ukes and, personally, I detest them. They don't offer any advantage for tuning and the weight that they add to the headstock is a constant irritation for me. The added weight might not affect a banjo uke but, again personally, I wouldn't have anything to do with them.

I just installed Peghed tuners on a vintage hawaiian uke and, so far, I really like them. It does take a bit to get used to them since they do act like violin peg friction tuners (push to tighten and pull slightly to loosen while tuning) but so far so good.

For a banjo uke, I think that ears or no ears wouldn't throw off the look too much. If it was vintage, I'd think otherwise but since it's not then go with what works for you. Good geared tuners or friction, whichever is your preference, would work but I'd stay away with the locking ones. Not worth the money to me.

If I remember correctly, the KoAloha concert I sold had the locking type of friction peg, and I didn't see it as any improvement over the standard friction peg. Fine adjustments were just as difficult on the locking as on the standard. That was one of the reasons I decided to sell it. I would vote for Pegheds if you wanted to keep the traditional look. But, if you want to try "gears with ears" I suggest the Ping brand. They are made especially for banjoleles. I know Ukulele World sells them. I've tried them on a no-name banjo uke and they work fine. Frank B.

Thanks for all the replies so far. My Kala travel uke has some gears with ears variety tuners and they work great. I have been looking at both types of tuners and I'm trying to decide which ones will work.

It looks like it is a unanimous thumbs down on the locking tuners I was asking about. I found a couple of other comments from other sites and everyone says the same thing.

I looked at the Peghed tuners and they are rather pricey.

I have some planetary tuners on my mountain dulcimer and I was thinking maybe something like that would work on this Banjolele. I found some on this site http://www.playbetterbluegrass.com/planetary_tuners_5227_prd1.htm
