CHORD MELODY METHODS WORKSHOP
A workshop series on making your own chord melodies will be taught at Island Bazaar in Huntington Beach beginning March 20. The classes consist of eight hours held on consecutive Saturdays from 3:00 PM to 5:00PM. Included will be chord structures, chord families, inversions, picking the right chord, intros and endings and melody development. A variety of chord melodies will be presented for Intermediate level players.

Cost of the series is $65.00. If you are not sure you are ready, attend the first session for $18.00 to find out. No new attendees after the first session. Attendance is limited

Jim Beloff (Jumpin’ Jim songbooks; The Joy Of Uke DVDs) introduces you to the basics of playing the ukulele including holding, tuning, strumming and making the chords. We will play through a dozen well-known songs learning new chords, strums, tips and techniques along the way. Bring a GCEA soprano-tuned uke and be ready to have a lot of fun. At the end of the workshop you will have made a new life-long friend—your ukulele! See uke there!

This workshop takes off from where the beginner workshop ends. More challenging arrangements and chord solos are introduced with sophisticated jazz chord changes. Also, finger-picking patterns and performance techniques will be highlighted. Time will be set aside at the end of the workshop for those who would like to perform a song (including Jumpin’ Jim himself).

Fingerpick melodies and accompaniment on blues repetoire suitable for the ukulele. An introduction to right hand fingerpicking, what makes a melody "blue" and songs from 1920s guitar greats like Charlie Jordan and Barbecue Bob, as well as Lemon Nash of Louisiana and Rabbit Muse of Virginia who were African American ukulele players and showmen with distinctive styles on traditional and standard jazz material. We'll listen to some of their recordings, talk about their lives and learn a song (by ear-no tab) from each in class. Bring your uke, notebook and pencil, recorders ok if unobstrusive.
