Ukulele with Greg Hawkes
Wednesdays [8:00 pm]: Sept. 16, 23, 30, Oct. 7, 14, 21
Are you tempted by the sweet sound of the ukulele? Learn to play with Greg Hawkes. Strum your way to fun! The ukulele is becoming more popular than ever and it's fun to play!

If you've recently acquired a ukulele and would like to learn to play, or if you already know a few chords and would like to expand your technique and repetoire, then this is the class for you. We'll start by learning some basic chords and strums, then start playing some songs. Each week we'll learn new songs and chords. The only requirement is a ukulele and a desire to have fun.
(beginners or intermediate beginners)

Greg Hawkes is the famed keyboardist and co-founder of The Cars (1977-1987), who helped define the sounds of the 80’s with his signature keyboard style heard on The Cars’ “Let’s Go” and “Just What I Needed,” as well as his arpeggiated and syncopated synth lines on “Shake it Up” and “Heartbeat City.” Since his days with the Cars, he released "The Beatles Uke," an album of his favorite Beatles tunes on ukulele. greghawkesmusic.com

Tough Times Don't Last; Ukuleles Do
As the modern world crumbles around us, one musical instrument stands tall, as tiny as it is: the ukulele. Its happy-go-lucky sound has been bringing cheer since its heyday in Hawaii, its other heyday in the 1920s, and its third and fourth heydays in the 50s and 60s. Topping the bill is the essential Jumpin' Jim Beloff. Also, Joel "Ukulele Eck" Eckhaus, Danno Sullivan, and Davis Sweet.

Boulder Acoustic Society Playing at the Coffee Gallery Backstage in Altadena (Near L.A.)
BOULDER ACOUSTIC SOCIETY....Bob Stane Says: Ethereal, orchestral. Catch this show. This is an encore. a four piece band with a new take on American Roots Music. Aaron, Brad, Kailin and Scott are accomplished multi-instrumentalists who captivate audiences with guitar, fiddle, string bass, marimba, ukulele, percussion, banjo and mandolin. Their deep respect for tradition, passion for innovation and intriguing instrumentation creates a remarkable and memorable listening experience. The music is modern and accessible, subtle yet virtuosic and serious yet light hearted. BAS is known all over North America for their genre-blending song writing, amazing improvisation and intimate, personal vocals. "Here, for us, is the future of String Band Music on a silver platter." Darol Anger.

Boulder Acoustic Society.
As their name implies, this young quartet specializes in all things acoustic: fiddles, ukuleles, accordions, upright basses. What you might not glean from their name, however, is that these guys tackle the traditions with the gusto of a group of rabble-rousing punks. It’s grit meets grace, Colorado-style.
B.A.S.’s music is intense and exciting for listeners, with something new and interesting at every turn. The energy that B.A.S. brings to a stage can tip a festival into overdrive or mesmerize a club audience as they dance into the wee hours. All of this comes from four guys who wear vintage clothes, savor small batch bourbon and rock the ukulele.

IF you've never seen B.A.S. this is a rare opportunity in L.A.'s backyard. Crazy talented musicians from Boulder, Co.

VICTORIA VOX...with special operetta guests LILA BLOOM play Altadena (Near L.A.)
Victoria Vox only comes to California once per year and her fave spot is The Coffee Gallery Backstage. She has an enthusiastic following of admirers and she is cute and funny and does great things with the uke. She is featured at ukelele festivals all over America. Victoria Vox says that sad songs are harder to come by on the ukulele. Actually, there are a couple of heartbreak themes on her newest album, Chameleon, but surrounded by the ukulele and other contemporary sounds, the end result is a bright and enchanting pop record.
Vox graduated from The Berklee College of Music with honors and a degree in songwriting -- releasing a handful of DIY, guitar-driven albums before a friend gave her the 4-stringed instrument. It proved to be the perfect new partner for her rich voice and changed the way she wrote and arranged music.
Her first ukulele driven record, Victoria Vox and Her Jumping Flea was funded by fan donations and released in 2006. The refreshing disc was well received, and featured on NPR’s “To The Best of Our Knowledge,” while songs were featured on television and in independent movies. Vox has also been awarded runner-up and First Place in the International Acoustic Music Awards and also included in Relix Magazine’s list of artists to watch.
Vox, who lives in Baltimore now, has been averaging 150 dates for the past several years. “I'm finding that non-ukulele listeners are converted daily,” she says. “It's really fun to give people what they weren't expecting.” Not that Vox is the only current artist to slip in a little ukulele -- which seems to be on the cusp of comeback? But, the singer-songwriter is dedicated to the tiny instrument, and maybe, just maybe helping make it cool again. Plus...
LILA BLOOM..."An eerie voicemail left at the wrong number sparked the story for the project now called Lila Bloom, which focuses on a lover looking back on the inception, growth, and demise of a relationship. An operetta of sorts featuring haunting yet sultry vocals by the part of the female lover, and equally stinging guitar licks by the part of the male lover, Lila Bloom has a sound all its own. Lila Bloom is from Denver, Colorado, and has a total of four members which will be performing at the Coffee Gallery Backstage."

"Lila Bloom is a Denver-based act with roots in Jazz, Folk, and Alternative Rock. The band performs the original "Say You'll Stay" operetta; a project sparked in May 2008 when an eerie voicemail left by an old woman ("Eloise") at the wrong number spoke of dreams, love, and death by "little songs". Eloise is scattered throughout the lyrics of the operetta, watching over the two lovers as they look back over the inception, growth, and demise of their relationship.

Lila Bloom performs the sultry vocals of the operetta, while the stinging licks of the guitar intertwine. It creates a harmony that caresses the audience and entices each person want to "stay the night". Ken Crow plays the guitar, Aaron Ainbinder plays bass, and Emily backs up Ms. Bloom's vocals, adding a haunting echo and harmony to the operetta. A sultry passion play of music in just under an hour. A fine two act show.
