Ukulele Workshop with OHTA-SAN
A prodigy of Eddie Kamae at age 12, he began performing at age 15. His love for the 'ukulele has lasted decades. With a desire to create a fuller sound as a solo artist, Ohta-san was the originator of the low G string to expand the 'ukulele's lower note abilities to reach more complex genres of music such as jazz, pop, classical, Latin, Japanese, Broadway tunes, and sweet ballads. With further creative intent, percussion techniques were devised and new sounds were discovered. With over 20 years as guest instructor at University of Hawai'i, Manoa, his own school of 'ukulele, and many years instructing semester-long courses and workshops, Ohta-san enjoys sharing the capabilities of the 'ukulele with others. From the correct holding position, tunings, songs, techniques: he will answer questions, and discuss the history of the instrument from his perspective. Spend an hour with Ohta-san and you will come away with a new appreciation for the 'ukulele and it's capabilities and a better understanding of this humble, humorous and incredibly talented Hawaiian music legend.

OHTA-SAN in Concert with Herb Ohta Jr. and Nando Suan
Hawaii Music Live and Pumehana Productions are proud to present 'Ukulele legend OHTA-SAN (Herb Ohta). Internationally renowned for his exceptional Jazz and Bosa Nova sound, Ohta-san has made history by showcasing his incredible talents and the abilities of the 'ukulele beyond what many thought impossible for this tiny four stringed instrument. The first to tune the ‘ukulele with a lower G string, he was able to expand the range of the instrument to play more complex genres of music. With over 60 albums recorded and 300 tunes played on national radio, Ohta-San has taken the artistry of the ukulele to new heights over almost four decades. His impeccable timing, diverse techniques and unique style bring to life the romance and love of his music. This evening will also feature guitarist Nando Suan and Herb Ohta, Jr.
