Bought a set of red low G Aquila strings for my Eddy Finn concert banjolele. Bill Thompson recommended the reds for that application, and I must say he was right about the punch they added (as if it really needed more punch). I neglectfully left the excess string hanging on the first string post until my wife pointed it out to me. When I attempted to remove the excess string using finger nail clippers, I ended up cutting the full string as well.

Not my brightest moment.

What to do now? buy another set of strings just for one A string? Bill had mentioned using a low G string in the first string position as a low A string, so that gave me an idea. I scrounged around in my junk box and found a new wound G string that fit perfectly in the nut and bridge grooves, and that became my low A string.

It looked odd, but the folks at the jam session last Saturday said it sounded good: supposedly it is a blues application.

The surprising thing to me is that I do not get the buzz from the wound string in the first position that usually happens with a wound string in the fourth position. I guess I lucked out.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to come over and shoot the gab with you at the Turlock Uke Jamz, Frank. We were sure busy giving away lots of prizes! Would have loved to try out your string experiment.
