Good day, fellow ukers! Been a while since ol' Goaticus has been on the board. Interested in some thoughts on the infamous polk-a-lay-lee.

I bought one from a lady who found it in a storage space she bought. All nice, intact, tuners in good shape, and sounds nice enough. However, the 'strap' if you can call it that, was very short, and had clearly broken, and myself being a man of girth, if you will, I need something longer. Has anyone ever made a strap for it? I was just figuring to have my wife braid me a new one of various bright colors of yarn to give that crazy 60's feel.

Also, seeing as most don't really like the sound, has anyone replaced the face with a better wood? I considered carefully removing the face and replacing it with maybe purple heart wood. I don't know that they're really collectable enough to worry about keeping it original, and if I want to play, a better wood might be desirable.

Thoughts? Thanks!

The body is quite narrow, so I doubt that replacing the top would improve the sound dramatically enough.

My red fretboard one has a golden braided strap with a reddish hue to it, and a spiral twist. The black fretboard ones had a black one. I could take some reference pictures if you like.

I have the original black, it is just broken and very short, too short to use. Though maybe you could give me the length, assuming it's original. Of course, my issue is that I am a pretty big man and might need something longer, but interested to know the actual length. Thanks!

Sorry for the terribly late reply, but the cord on mine is 115 cm (45 inches) long! The knot is a simple loop one.

Hi did you find anyone to make you a strap yet? I have a lot of yarn from knitting maybe I can make one for you. How long do you want it to be, etc?
