Hi everyone. First-timer, here. I remember someone telling me once about how publishers in the Tin Pan Alley days had a 'uke test', that is, the song plugger would do their bit and demo the songs for the publishers with piano accompaniment, then the publisher would say something like, "OK. Now play it on a ukulele", to prove that it would work just as well on that humble little instrument for people who didn't happen to have a piano in the house.
Anyone else heard of this?

I haven't heard of this, but it certainly sounds reasonable.

I have heard that a long time ago. Back in the tin pan alley days instruments were very expensive.
